Guide and travellers walking along a raised path between canals and coconut palms in the delta

About

About Mekong Tours

We plan private routes of two to five days from Ho Chi Minh City through the Mekong Delta, and one that crosses into Cambodia by river. That is all we do, and this page explains how, and where we are the wrong choice.

What we do

Mekong Tours sells four private routes along one line: Ho Chi Minh City to Ben Tre and Vinh Long, Can Tho, Chau Doc and, for the longest, Phnom Penh by speedboat. Each runs for one party, with its own car, driver and English-speaking guide, and a 3–4 star hotel in town each night. We quote per person for your dates and party size, and the quote names every hotel.

We keep the range narrow on purpose. A short list of routes on one line is a list we can describe accurately: where you sleep, how many hours each leg takes, what each route leaves out. The routes page shows all of that on one table.

How we plan a route

  1. Night first. We decide where you sleep from the mornings you want: Cai Rang needs Can Tho the night before; Tra Su and the boat to Cambodia need Chau Doc.
  2. One town per night at most. No sleeping somewhere you only see in the dark.
  3. Long legs in daylight. The longest drives are placed so you arrive before dinner.
  4. The honest version. We tell you the floating markets are smaller than their photographs, which day is a long drive, and which month the forest is low.
  5. Facts with dates. Fares, opening hours and border rules on this site carry their source and the date we read it, because they change.

Who the routes suit

The routes are designed for people on a first visit to Vietnam, with a few days to give the delta between Ho Chi Minh City and somewhere else: Cambodia, the central coast or a flight home. They want to see the river working in the early morning rather than from a boat full of other visitors at midday, and they would rather drive a little less and sleep in the right town than tick off more stops.

They work for couples, small families, friends travelling together and solo travellers who prefer a guide to a bus. Children are welcome; tell us their ages, because a 05:30 start for the market and a five-hour drive matter more to a six-year-old than any sight. Travellers with limited mobility should tell us before we quote: the delta's boats are boarded from landings and steps, often without handrails, and we would rather plan around that than discover it at the river.

What we do not do well

  • Single-day trips. We do not run them. Every route has at least one night in the delta.
  • Homestay trips. We do not build routes around a night with a family. Our nights are in hotels.
  • Luxury. We book 3–4 star hotels. If a resort or a high-end hotel is the reason for your trip, we are the wrong people to plan it.
  • Large groups. Our largest vehicle carries a party of about eight comfortably. Bigger groups need a coach and a different kind of operator.
  • Cambodia beyond the boat. We get you to Phnom Penh. Your Cambodian hotels and onward travel are yours to arrange, or another company's.
  • Languages other than English. Ask, but we cannot promise a guide in another language.

Why there are no reviews on this site

We do not publish testimonials or ratings on our own pages. Reviews on a company's own site are chosen by the company, and you have no way to check them.

How we use facts on this site

Every fare, opening time, distance and border rule on these pages comes from a published source, named under the section where it appears, with the date we checked it. Road times are planning ranges built from route distances, and say so. Where sources disagree, or where we could not confirm something from an official source, the page says that too, and tells you to check before you travel.

Prices of our routes are not published, because they depend on your party size and dates. The pricing page explains how a quote is built and lists the local prices we can state.

Getting in touch

Send the form at the bottom of any page. We reply by email to the address you give. The contact page explains what to include so the first reply can be a priced route rather than a list of questions.

Common questions

Questions travellers ask most

Are you a tour operator or an agent?

We plan and run the routes on this site: the itinerary, the car, the guide and the hotel bookings. The speedboat to Phnom Penh is a public service run by its own operator, and we book seats on it.

Can we meet you in Ho Chi Minh City before the trip?

Your guide meets you at your hotel on the first morning. Everything before that is arranged by email.

Do you take children?

Yes. Tell us their ages; the early starts and the long drive on some routes matter more for small children than any sight.

Why only one line through the delta?

Because it is the line most first visits follow, and narrowing to it lets us describe every night and every leg accurately.
