Can Tho, the city on the Hau
The delta's big river city, on the Hau River, and the only practical base for Cai Rang floating market. One night gives you the market; two give you the market without the rush.
Can Tho in brief

What Can Tho is, plainly
Can Tho is a working city, not a riverside village. Its centre, Ninh Kieu, is a grid of shops, hotels and traffic that runs down to a long promenade on the Hau River, with a pedestrian bridge built in 2016 and a night market that opens from about four in the afternoon. You come here for what the river does in the early morning, and for the food in the evening.
The river does less than it used to. Cai Rang, about 6 km downstream, is the delta's main surviving floating market, and its market culture was recognised as national intangible heritage in 2016. But roads and bridges have taken much of the trade onto trucks, the riverbank has been embanked, and a large share of the boats on the water at seven o'clock now carry visitors. In 2020, experts quoted in the Vietnamese press warned it could decline within ten to twenty years. Go early, and go expecting a market that is smaller than its photographs.
Away from the river, the Binh Thuy ancient house, built in 1870 by the Duong family, mixes French facades with a Vietnamese interior and was used as a set for the 1992 film L'Amant. It is still owned by the Duong family.

How many nights, and why fewer goes wrong
One night is the minimum, and it has to be the night before the market. Trading at Cai Rang peaks between about 06:00 and 07:30 and thins out after eight; the boat from Ninh Kieu takes 30 to 40 minutes. From Ho Chi Minh City, three hours away, nobody arrives in time.
Two nights change the shape of the stay. With one, the market morning is followed by checkout and a long drive. With two, you can go back to the hotel after the market, sleep, and spend the afternoon on Con Son islet, about 7 km from the centre, or simply on the riverfront. Most of our routes give Can Tho one night because Chau Doc needs its own, but it is the first place we would add a night.
When to go
December to April is dry and suits the boats. May to November is the rainy season, with rain on about 20 to 22 days a month from June to October in the long-term record; September is the wettest month. Riverside streets can flood at the high tides of October and November.
Can Tho is warm all year: mean daily highs run from about 30 °C in December to about 34 °C in April. The rainy season is not a reason to stay away, but plan for rain on most days and pack a light rain jacket. The weeks around the Lunar New Year are busy with Vietnamese visitors and hotel rates rise.

Routes that sleep in Can Tho
Every route we run spends a night here. The two-day Can Tho route is built around it alone. The three-day route sleeps here and then in Chau Doc. The four-day route and the five-day route to Phnom Penh arrive from Vinh Long the day before the market.
When to leave Can Tho out
- You have already seen a floating market and the photographs were the point — Cai Rang will not match them
- You cannot face a 05:30 start; without the market, Can Tho is a pleasant city rather than a reason to come
- Your trip is about Chau Doc and Cambodia and you are short of nights — sleep in Chau Doc twice instead
- You want a rural night; Can Tho is a city
Common questions
Questions travellers ask most
Is Cai Rang still worth getting up for?
Yes, if you go in its trading hour and expect a smaller market than the photographs. After eight it is mostly tourist boats.
Is Phong Dien market a better choice?
It is smaller and further out, about 20 km from the centre, with fewer boats. We use Cai Rang because it is still the one with wholesale trade.
Where should we stay in Can Tho?
Near Ninh Kieu wharf, so the market boat leaves from your door and the riverfront is a short walk in the evening.
Can we fly into Can Tho?
Yes, on domestic flights. The route then starts in Can Tho and runs west, or east back to Ho Chi Minh City.
