Plan · Where to sleep

Choosing your overnight base

On a multi-day delta route, the question is not what to see but where to sleep, because the delta's good hours come before eight in the morning. Here are the four towns our routes can sleep in, what each one puts on your doorstep at dawn, and how to combine them.

The rule we plan by

Choose the base for the morning after, not for the afternoon you arrive. A delta afternoon is hot, bright and much the same from one town to the next. A delta morning is where the places differ: the market at Cai Rang is over by nine, Tra Su is at its quietest from opening at 06:30, and the speedboat to Cambodia leaves Chau Doc at 07:00. Each of those needs the night before it in the right town.

The second rule is to avoid sleeping somewhere you only see in the dark. A route that reaches a town at seven in the evening and leaves at eight in the morning has used a hotel, not a place. That is why our routes have one town per night at most, and why the longest drives are placed so that you arrive in daylight.

Can Tho: the base everyone needs once

Every route we run sleeps in Can Tho, for one reason: Cai Rang. The market is the delta's main surviving floating market, and although it has shrunk as trade moved to trucks, its trading hour is still a working market. The boat leaves Ninh Kieu at about 05:30. Can Tho also has a wide choice of hotels, lively evenings on the riverfront and plenty of food, so it is the town where a second night costs least and gives most.

Choose two nights in Can Tho if you want the market morning to be unhurried, or if your route is short and you would rather rest than drive further. Read more on the Can Tho page.

Chau Doc: the far end, and the way out

Chau Doc is the base for the western delta: Sam Mountain, the Tra Su forest, the Cham villages across the river and the boat to Phnom Penh. It is a long way from Ho Chi Minh City, about 235 km, so a night here has to justify a long drive at some point in the route. One night gets you the mountain and the forest. Two nights get you the town as well, and are required if you leave on the 07:00 boat.

The Chau Doc page covers the sights, the flood season and local costs.

Vinh Long or Ben Tre: the first night east of the Hau

Both towns sit in the orchard and coconut country between the Tien and Co Chien rivers, now one province. We put the first night of our longer routes in Vinh Long rather than Ben Tre, because Vinh Long is about an hour from Can Tho and Ben Tre about two, and because the boat to An Binh islet leaves from Vinh Long's own riverfront. Ben Tre works as a morning on the way: a canal, a coconut-candy workshop, lunch.

We usually book a 3-star hotel in Vinh Long. The Ben Tre and Vinh Long page explains the area.

Combinations that work

DaysBases, in orderRoute
2Can ThoCan Tho, 2 days
3Can Tho → Chau DocCan Tho and Chau Doc, 3 days
3Can Tho ×2A slower version of the two-day route, on request
4Vinh Long → Can Tho → Chau DocBen Tre to Chau Doc, 4 days
5Vinh Long → Can Tho → Chau Doc ×2, then the boatDelta to Phnom Penh, 5 days

Combinations that do not work: Chau Doc on a two-day trip (nine to eleven hours in the car for one evening), Ben Tre and Chau Doc on consecutive nights (about 230 km, four to five hours, between them for no gain), and any route that sleeps in four towns in four nights.

Hotels at each base

We book 3–4 star hotels in the centre of each town, close to the wharf or the road out. We do not sell homestay-based trips or luxury resort stays, so neither appears on our routes. Your quote names each hotel and room before you pay. Hotels near Ninh Kieu in Can Tho averaged about VND 500,000 to 800,000 a night in a 2023 press survey; rates rise in the weeks around the Lunar New Year.

Common questions

Questions travellers ask most

Can Tho or Chau Doc, if we can only sleep in one?

Can Tho, if your trip starts and ends in Ho Chi Minh City; it is closer and gives you the market. Chau Doc, if you are going on to Phnom Penh by boat.

Is it worth sleeping in My Tho?

Not on our routes. It is close enough to the city to be visited in a morning, and a night there leaves you far from Can Tho.

Can we stay on a boat instead of a hotel?

Overnight boats run between Cai Be and Can Tho, but they are a different kind of trip and we do not sell them. Our routes use hotels in town.

How many hotel changes is too many?

One per night is our limit, and only because the towns are close. If a route needs more than four changes in five days, it has too many towns in it.
