Speedboat leaving the jetty at Chau Doc in the early morning on the Hau River

Plan · Getting across

Chau Doc to Phnom Penh, by boat or road

How the crossing from the Vietnamese delta into Cambodia actually works: the daily speedboat and its published fare, what happens at the river border, the visa you need, and when the road is the better choice.

The short answer

Take the boat if you want to arrive in Phnom Penh by river and do not mind a long, simple day. A public speedboat leaves Chau Doc every morning at 07:00 and is scheduled into Phnom Penh at 13:30, about six and a half hours including the border. Take the road if heat, a fixed timetable or the boat's basic comfort worry you more than a land border does.

The boat day, hour by hour

  1. About 06:30. Arrive at the jetty with your passport, US dollars in cash for a Cambodian visa on arrival if you need one, and a passport photo.
  2. Boarding. Staff collect passports, documents and visa money at the start of the trip. You get your passport back after the border.
  3. The first two hours. Up the Hau River and north-east along a canal, past the Cham houses and mosques of Chau Phong and the sand barges that work the river.
  4. Vinh Xuong. The Vietnamese exit post. Staff take the passports in; passengers wait, at the post reported in 2023 in a café with a river balcony.
  5. Kaam Samnor. The Cambodian post, between Kandal and Prey Veng provinces. Visas on arrival are issued here. There is nothing to buy at this stop, so carry water and a snack.
  6. The Mekong to Phnom Penh. A wide river with a few fishing villages along the banks. Arrival on the riverside in the north of Daun Penh.

A traveller's account published in 2023 and updated in 2024 describes a boat for up to 60 passengers with coach-style seats, a flush toilet, an open rear deck where you get wet if it rains, and no air-conditioning or fans, with water and snacks included. Boats change; treat that as a description, not a promise.

Visas: what you need on each side

Leaving Vietnam

Vietnam issues e-visas to every nationality, for stays of up to 90 days, through the Immigration Department's official portal only. Vinh Xuong is on the government's list of gates where foreigners may enter and leave on an e-visa.

Entering Cambodia

Cambodia's embassies list Kaam Samnor as a crossing where visas on arrival are available. The Cambodian e-visa is not listed for this crossing, and reader reports disagree about whether it works there, so we plan on a visa on arrival or a visa obtained from an embassy before travel. The tourist visa is single entry, valid three months, for a stay of 30 days. A visa on arrival needs a passport valid for at least six months, a recent photo and a form completed at the border. The Cambodian embassy in Paris lists ten nationalities, among them Bangladesh, Pakistan and Nigeria, that must get a visa before departure instead. The fee is widely reported as USD 30, but the embassy pages we checked do not state it; bring US dollars in cash and confirm before you travel.

Vietnamese passport holders

Vietnamese citizens with an ordinary passport valid for at least six months may stay in Cambodia for up to 30 days without a visa. We found no official basis for this crossing on a citizen ID card alone, so we plan it on passports only.

The road alternative

By car, Chau Doc to Phnom Penh is roughly 110 to 160 km depending on the border post. The established international road crossing for foreign visitors near Chau Doc is Tinh Bien – Phnom Den, which is on Vietnam's e-visa list; it is the longer way round, about 160 km in the route model. A shorter road crossing, Khanh Binh – Chrey Thom, about 110 km, was upgraded to an international gate and opened on 3 October 2026; it is not on the 2023 e-visa list, and we will not route foreign travellers through it until its e-visa status is clear.

Allow about four to six hours door to door, including the border; that is our estimate, not a timetable. By private car, the usual plan is one car to the border and a second on the Cambodian side, which we arrange on request. The road wins when the boat's timetable does not fit, when the heat on board worries you, or when you have more luggage than a speedboat handles comfortably.

Arriving in Phnom Penh

The boat docks on the riverside in the north of the Daun Penh district, a short ride from most central hotels. If you are flying on, note that Phnom Penh's main airport moved: Techo International Airport (KTI) opened on 9 September 2025, about 24 km south of the Independence Monument in the centre, replacing the old airport at Pochentong for commercial flights. Do not plan a same-day flight after the boat; the arrival time can slip with the border.

How we use the crossing

The five-day route ends on this boat, with the ticket included and a second night in Chau Doc so you reach the 07:00 departure without a 05:00 start. The four-day route ends in Chau Doc, and adding the boat to it means adding a night. In the other direction, you can take the 12:30 boat from Phnom Penh, arrive in Chau Doc at 18:30, and start a delta route the next morning running east.

Your guide sees you onto the boat but does not cross; on board, the boat staff handle the paperwork. More about the town itself is on the Chau Doc page.

Common questions

Questions travellers ask most

Can we use the Cambodian e-visa on the boat?

Cambodia's embassies list the e-visa only for other crossings, and reports from travellers disagree. Plan on a visa on arrival, or an embassy visa before travel.

Is there a direct boat from Ho Chi Minh City to Phnom Penh?

We found no scheduled direct speedboat. The scheduled service runs from Chau Doc; multi-day boats and cruise ships are a different kind of trip.

How much luggage can we bring?

The operator does not publish an allowance. Travellers report that ordinary suitcases are carried; ask us if you have anything large.

What if the boat is full?

Book at least a day or two ahead; on our routes we book it when you confirm. If it is full, we arrange the road crossing instead.
