Houseboats with fish cages beneath them moored on the Hau River at Chau Doc

Chau Doc, where the river comes in

A border town on the Hau River, about 235 km from Ho Chi Minh City: pilgrims on Sam Mountain, mosques on the far bank, fish farms under the houseboats and a cassia forest that floods every autumn. It needs two nights, and it is where the boat to Phnom Penh starts.

What Chau Doc is, plainly

Chau Doc does not look like the orchard delta further east. It is a busy market town where several communities meet. Sam Mountain, a hill of about 284 m on the edge of town, has around 200 religious sites on its slopes, and the temple of the Lady of the Realm at its foot is a major pilgrimage site; her festival, held on the 23rd to 27th days of the fourth lunar month, was added to UNESCO's intangible heritage list in December 2024. Across the river, on Chau Giang and Chau Phong, live Cham Muslim communities in stilt houses around their mosques; the Mubarak mosque was first built in 1750 and rebuilt in 1922.

On the river itself, houseboats sit over cages of farmed catfish, a way of life the national tourism authority dates back about fifty years. Twenty kilometres out of town, the Tra Su cassia forest covers about 850 ha of flooded woodland where storks and egrets nest in the canopy.

What has been over-sold: the town centre is plain and noisy, the mountain's main temple can be crowded and commercial around festival days, and the forest in the dry months is a shallower, more walked place than the photographs taken in October suggest.

How many nights, and why fewer goes wrong

Two. Chau Doc's two key moments are at opposite ends of the day: Tra Su when it opens at 06:30, with the softest light in the first two hours, and Sam Mountain in the late afternoon. Arriving from Can Tho at lunchtime, one night gives you the mountain that evening and the forest the next morning, then a long drive away. It works, and our three-day route does it, but there is no time for the Cham bank or the market.

A second night adds a full day: the forest at opening, the market and its tubs of mam in the late morning, the ferry to the Cham villages after lunch, a fish farm on the way back. If you are taking the boat to Phnom Penh, the second night is not optional, because the boat leaves at 07:00.

When to go

JFMAMJJASONDChau Doc and Tra Su

September to November is flood season: the water is high, Tra Su is at its fullest and the boats go deepest. February to April are the driest months and April the hottest; before the flood returns the forest holds much less water.

In 2025 the flood was forecast to peak at Chau Doc in the second week of October, at about the second alarm level. High water is a reason to come, not to stay away; the town is used to it. Pilgrim crowds peak around the Ba Chua Xu festival in the fourth lunar month, usually in May or June of the western calendar, so check the lunar dates for your year.

Routes that sleep in Chau Doc

The three-day Can Tho and Chau Doc route gives it one night and drives home. The four-day Ben Tre to Chau Doc route ends here after a night and a morning. The five-day route to Phnom Penh gives it the two nights it deserves and leaves on the 07:00 boat.

When to leave Chau Doc out

  • You have two days or fewer — the round trip from Ho Chi Minh City is nine to eleven hours in the car
  • You travel in the dry season mainly for Tra Su; the water is low, and April is the hottest month
  • You dislike crowds and your dates fall on the Ba Chua Xu festival
  • You are flying out of Ho Chi Minh City the next morning; Chau Doc is too far for a last night

Common questions

Questions travellers ask most

Is Tra Su worth it outside the flood season?

Yes, with lower expectations. From September to November the boats go deep into the forest; in the dry months more of the visit is on the walkway.

Can we visit the Cham villages respectfully?

Yes. Cover shoulders and knees, remove shoes where asked, and avoid Friday midday prayers at the mosques. Your guide will tell you when photographs are welcome.

Is one night in Chau Doc enough?

It gives you Sam Mountain in the evening and Tra Su the next morning. It does not leave time for the Cham bank or the market.

Can we reach Ha Tien or Phu Quoc from here?

Yes, by road to Ha Tien and the ferry on, but that is a different trip and not one of our routes.
