Who this route is for
This route is for travellers who can give the delta one night and want that night to count. It is built around a single morning: Cai Rang floating market, which is busiest from about 06:00 to 07:30 and quiet by nine. You cannot reach it at that hour from Ho Chi Minh City, which is why the route sleeps in Can Tho and why we do not sell it as a day trip.
The first day uses the drive. Rather than going straight to Can Tho, the car leaves the expressway at Vinh Long, about 136 km from the city, and a boat takes you across to An Binh islet, more than 60 km² of orchards and small canals between the Tien and Co Chien rivers. After lunch it is about 41 km on to Can Tho, which leaves time for one old house and the riverfront before dark.
If you have three days, the Can Tho and Chau Doc route adds Sam Mountain and Tra Su forest. If you are carrying on to Cambodia, look at the five-day route instead.
Day by day
Day 1
Ho Chi Minh City to An Binh islet, then Can Tho
The car collects you at your hotel at 07:30, after the worst of the morning traffic has started to move. The road west is expressway almost all the way: Ho Chi Minh City to Trung Luong, on to My Thuan, and across the Tien River on the My Thuan 2 bridge, which opened at the end of 2023. Your guide uses the drive to explain what you are looking at, because from the car the delta is mostly rice and water.
At Vinh Long, about two and a half to three hours out, you leave the car at the river and take a small boat across to An Binh islet. The boat turns off the main channel into canals barely wider than itself, past fruit gardens and small family landings. Lunch is on the islet. Afterwards the car takes you about an hour on to Can Tho, crossing the Hau River on the Can Tho bridge.
In the late afternoon your guide takes you to the Binh Thuy ancient house, built in 1870 by the Duong family and used as a set for the 1992 film L'Amant. It reopens at 14:00 after a midday closure. The evening is yours on the Ninh Kieu riverfront, where the night market opens from around 16:00.
Day 2
Cai Rang at first light, back to Ho Chi Minh City
Cai Rang between 06:00 and 07:30, before the traders pack up
Your guide meets you in the lobby at 05:30. The boat leaves from Ninh Kieu wharf and takes 30 to 40 minutes down the Hau River to Cai Rang, about 6 km from the centre, arriving as trading peaks. Wholesale boats hang a sample of what they sell from a pole: a pumpkin, a bunch of bananas, a yam. Smaller boats sell coffee and noodle soup to the traders, and breakfast is a bowl of hu tieu on the water.
On the way back the boat turns into a side canal to a rice-noodle workshop and an orchard, so you return to the hotel around 10:00. After checkout the car takes you back east, 3 to 3.5 hours, and you are in Ho Chi Minh City by mid-afternoon.
The honest version of Cai Rang
Cai Rang is the delta's main surviving floating market, and its market culture was listed as national intangible heritage in 2016. It is also smaller than the photographs that sell it. Roads and bridges let traders move goods by truck, embankments have narrowed the river edge, and a growing share of the boats you see at seven in the morning carry visitors rather than produce. Experts warned in 2020 that it could decline within ten to twenty years.
We still build this route around it, because early in the morning it is a working market and nothing else on the delta gives you the same sense of a river used as a street. What we do not do is promise hundreds of boats. Go expecting a market, not a postcard.

The two things that move this price most are the size of your party, because the car, guide and boats are shared between fewer or more people, and the date, because hotel rates rise around the Lunar New Year. The pricing page sets out every part of a quote. When you are ready, how to book explains the steps.

Who this route is NOT for
- Travellers who want to be back in Ho Chi Minh City the same evening — this route needs a night
- Anyone who cannot face a 05:30 start; the market is the reason for the night
- Travellers expecting a river packed with hundreds of trading boats
- Those who want Chau Doc, Sam Mountain or Tra Su — they need a third day
- Anyone who wants the night in a family homestay rather than a hotel
Every route uses 3–4 star hotels in town centres. We do not name a hotel on this site because the one we book depends on your dates and what is free; your quote names each hotel and room type before you pay anything.
Common questions
Questions travellers ask most
Can we see Cai Rang on a day trip instead?
Not in its busy hours. Can Tho is about three hours from Ho Chi Minh City, so a day trip arrives after the traders have left. That is why this route has a night.
Why stop at Vinh Long rather than My Tho or Ben Tre?
Vinh Long is on the expressway to Can Tho, so the islet costs little extra driving. My Tho and Ben Tre are off that line and fit better on the four-day route.
Can we add a second night in Can Tho?
Yes. The market morning then becomes unhurried, and the second afternoon is free for the riverfront or a half-day on Con Son islet. We price it as a three-day version.
What if it rains?
From June to October Can Tho's long-term record shows rain on about 20 to 22 days a month, so expect some wet mornings. The boats have covers and we carry rain ponchos.
