Mekong Tours

Do you run day trips to the Mekong Delta?

No. Every route here has at least one night in the delta, because the market at Cai Rang and the forest at Tra Su are morning places. A day trip spends most of its hours in the car.

Which route should we choose for a first visit?

With three days, the Can Tho and Chau Doc route shows the most for its length. With four, the Ben Tre to Chau Doc route spreads the driving more evenly. If you are going on to Cambodia, the five-day route ends in Phnom Penh by boat.

Are the routes shared with other travellers?

No. Each route is private: your party, your car, your guide, your dates.

How do we contact you?

Send the form on any page. We reply by email to the address you give, with questions if we need them and a priced route when we have what we need.

Tours

Can we start somewhere other than Ho Chi Minh City?

Yes. Can Tho has a domestic airport, and Chau Doc can be the start if you arrive by boat from Phnom Penh. The car and guide meet you there instead, and the route runs east.

Do the routes run on fixed dates?

No. Every route is private and starts on the day you choose.

Which route has the least driving per day?

The four-day route. No single leg is longer than about three hours unless you take the car back to the city at the end.

Can we add Sa Dec or the Khmer pagodas?

Yes, at the cost of most of a day each. We usually suggest adding a night rather than a stop, so the rest of the route keeps its mornings.

Can Tho, 2 days

Can we see Cai Rang on a day trip instead?

Not in its busy hours. Can Tho is about three hours from Ho Chi Minh City, so a day trip arrives after the traders have left. That is why this route has a night.

Why stop at Vinh Long rather than My Tho or Ben Tre?

Vinh Long is on the expressway to Can Tho, so the islet costs little extra driving. My Tho and Ben Tre are off that line and fit better on the four-day route.

Can we add a second night in Can Tho?

Yes. The market morning then becomes unhurried, and the second afternoon is free for the riverfront or a half-day on Con Son islet. We price it as a three-day version.

What if it rains?

From June to October Can Tho's long-term record shows rain on about 20 to 22 days a month, so expect some wet mornings. The boats have covers and we carry rain ponchos.

Can Tho and Chau Doc, 3 days

Can we do Can Tho and Chau Doc in two days?

Only by giving up either the market or the forest. Both are morning places, and each needs the night before it in the right town.

Is the cable car on Sam Mountain worth it?

It saves a climb in the heat, and the summit can also be reached by road. Your guide decides with you on the day, depending on the weather and how you feel after the market.

Can we end in Chau Doc and take the boat to Phnom Penh?

Yes, but the boat leaves at 07:00, so you would need a second night in Chau Doc. That is the five-day route, or a version of this one with an extra night.

Is Tra Su worth visiting in the dry season?

Yes, but it is a different place. From September to November the water is high and the boats go deep into the forest; in the dry months the water is lower and the walkway does more of the work.

Ben Tre to Chau Doc, 4 days

Can we run this route from west to east?

Yes. Start in Chau Doc, for example off the afternoon boat from Phnom Penh, and finish in Ho Chi Minh City after Ben Tre. The mornings still work because each night stays in the same town.

Why Vinh Long and not Ben Tre for the first night?

A night in Vinh Long puts you an hour from Can Tho instead of two, and lets you reach An Binh islet early. Ben Tre works as a morning, not as a base on this line.

How do we get back to Ho Chi Minh City?

Add the private car back on day four, take the public bus, or carry on to Phnom Penh by boat after an extra night. We price whichever you choose.

Is there time to rest?

The afternoons of days one and two are light, and day four ends at lunch. If you want a full free afternoon, add a night in Can Tho.

Delta to Phnom Penh, 5 days

Do we need a Cambodian visa in advance?

Cambodia's embassies list a visa on arrival at Kaam Samnor, the river post. The Paris embassy names a few nationalities that must get a visa before travelling, so check yours. The e-visa is not listed for this crossing, so do not rely on it. Vietnamese passport holders do not need a visa for stays up to 30 days.

Does our guide come to Phnom Penh?

No. Your guide sees you onto the boat in Chau Doc. On board, the boat staff handle the border paperwork.

Can we do the route in reverse?

Yes. The boat leaves Phnom Penh at 12:30 and reaches Chau Doc at 18:30, and the delta nights then run east to Ho Chi Minh City.

What happens if the boat is cancelled?

We have not built a promise we cannot keep into the route. If the boat does not run, we arrange the road crossing instead and show you any change in cost before it is made.

Pricing

Why is your quote higher than another one for the same route?

Usually because of the list above: our boat leaves for Cai Rang at 05:30, the guide is with you every day, the hotels are named and nobody earns a commission from your shopping. Ask the other company which of those lines it includes.

Is the price per person or per group?

Per person, for your party size. If your party changes, we requote; the per-person figure moves because the car, guide and boats are shared differently.

Do you charge more for single travellers?

A single traveller carries the whole car, guide and boat cost alone, and a single room. The quote shows that honestly rather than hiding it in a supplement.

Are the published local prices included in our route?

Entrance fees and boats on the itinerary are included, and so is the speedboat ticket on the five-day route. The visa fee and anything you buy yourself are not.

Read in full: Pricing.

How to book

How far ahead should we book?

A few weeks is usually enough outside the Lunar New Year and holiday weeks. For those dates, book as early as you can.

Can we book for next week?

Often, yes, for the delta routes. The five-day route also needs a seat on the boat, which we confirm before we confirm the route.

Do you need our passport details?

Only for the five-day route, for the boat ticket and the border. Hotels also ask for passports at check-in.

Can we pay on arrival?

The written quotation sets out when payment is due. We do not take payment in cash on the first morning.

Destinations

Which town is the better base, Can Tho or Chau Doc?

They do different jobs. Can Tho is the base for Cai Rang and has a wide choice of hotels; Chau Doc is the base for Tra Su, Sam Mountain and the boat to Cambodia. Most of our routes sleep in both.

Can we sleep in Ben Tre instead of Vinh Long?

Yes, but on our line Vinh Long is better placed: about an hour from Can Tho rather than two.

Are the old province names still used?

Travellers and many locals still say Ben Tre, Soc Trang or Tien Giang, but they are no longer provinces since the July 2025 merger.

Do you have pages for Tra Vinh or Ha Tien?

No. They are not on our routes, so we do not write about them as if they were.

Read in full: Destinations.

Can Tho

Is Cai Rang still worth getting up for?

Yes, if you go in its trading hour and expect a smaller market than the photographs. After eight it is mostly tourist boats.

Is Phong Dien market a better choice?

It is smaller and further out, about 20 km from the centre, with fewer boats. We use Cai Rang because it is still the one with wholesale trade.

Where should we stay in Can Tho?

Near Ninh Kieu wharf, so the market boat leaves from your door and the riverfront is a short walk in the evening.

Can we fly into Can Tho?

Yes, on domestic flights. The route then starts in Can Tho and runs west, or east back to Ho Chi Minh City.

Read in full: Can Tho.

Chau Doc

Is Tra Su worth it outside the flood season?

Yes, with lower expectations. From September to November the boats go deep into the forest; in the dry months more of the visit is on the walkway.

Can we visit the Cham villages respectfully?

Yes. Cover shoulders and knees, remove shoes where asked, and avoid Friday midday prayers at the mosques. Your guide will tell you when photographs are welcome.

Is one night in Chau Doc enough?

It gives you Sam Mountain in the evening and Tra Su the next morning. It does not leave time for the Cham bank or the market.

Can we reach Ha Tien or Phu Quoc from here?

Yes, by road to Ha Tien and the ferry on, but that is a different trip and not one of our routes.

Read in full: Chau Doc.

Ben Tre and Vinh Long

Is Ben Tre still a province?

No. Since July 2025 the former Ben Tre province is part of Vinh Long province. Ben Tre is still used as a town and travel name.

Should we visit the Cai Be floating market?

We do not include it. It has weakened, recent reports describe only a few trading boats early in the morning, and Cai Rang near Can Tho is a better use of a dawn.

When is fruit season?

May to August is the main harvest for rambutan, durian, longan and guava in the Cho Lach orchards.

Can we sleep in Ben Tre instead?

Yes, but it adds about an hour to the next day's drive to Can Tho. We price either.

Overnight bases

Can Tho or Chau Doc, if we can only sleep in one?

Can Tho, if your trip starts and ends in Ho Chi Minh City; it is closer and gives you the market. Chau Doc, if you are going on to Phnom Penh by boat.

Is it worth sleeping in My Tho?

Not on our routes. It is close enough to the city to be visited in a morning, and a night there leaves you far from Can Tho.

Can we stay on a boat instead of a hotel?

Overnight boats run between Cai Be and Can Tho, but they are a different kind of trip and we do not sell them. Our routes use hotels in town.

How many hotel changes is too many?

One per night is our limit, and only because the towns are close. If a route needs more than four changes in five days, it has too many towns in it.

Read in full: Overnight bases.

Chau Doc to Phnom Penh

Can we use the Cambodian e-visa on the boat?

Cambodia's embassies list the e-visa only for other crossings, and reports from travellers disagree. Plan on a visa on arrival, or an embassy visa before travel.

Is there a direct boat from Ho Chi Minh City to Phnom Penh?

We found no scheduled direct speedboat. The scheduled service runs from Chau Doc; multi-day boats and cruise ships are a different kind of trip.

How much luggage can we bring?

The operator does not publish an allowance. Travellers report that ordinary suitcases are carried; ask us if you have anything large.

What if the boat is full?

Book at least a day or two ahead; on our routes we book it when you confirm. If it is full, we arrange the road crossing instead.

When to go

Is the rainy season a bad time to visit?

No, but expect rain on most days from June to October and bring a light rain jacket. The orchards are at their peak from May to August.

When is Tra Su forest at its fullest?

From September to November, in the flood season. In the dry months the water is much lower.

When is fruit season?

May to August is the main harvest in the orchards around Cho Lach and on the islets.

Does the Phnom Penh boat run all year?

The operator publishes a daily schedule in both directions. Confirm close to your date, as with any boat.

About

Are you a tour operator or an agent?

We plan and run the routes on this site: the itinerary, the car, the guide and the hotel bookings. The speedboat to Phnom Penh is a public service run by its own operator, and we book seats on it.

Can we meet you in Ho Chi Minh City before the trip?

Your guide meets you at your hotel on the first morning. Everything before that is arranged by email.

Do you take children?

Yes. Tell us their ages; the early starts and the long drive on some routes matter more for small children than any sight.

Why only one line through the delta?

Because it is the line most first visits follow, and narrowing to it lets us describe every night and every leg accurately.
